Traditional Framed homes (typically using 2x4s and 2x6s) is the most widely used building style in the US. This is due to its cost effectiveness and incredible versatility. Whether you prefer a Country Ranch design or a more modern Contemporary style, traditional framing can be the perfect material and building technique to bring your design into reality. Spectrum Construction has extensive experience with this staple of building techniques. In addition to an entire home framed traditionally, this technique is often used in combination with Logs, Timber Framing, and SIPs; both in gable ends, and interior framing. It’s important to work with a company that knows how to utilize this common material in a unique and quality focused manner.

TIMBER FRAME HOMES

Timber Framing, also known as ‘Post and Beam’, is a traditional construction method using heavy timbers. Although entire structures can be built using this method, it has become much more popular to utilize Timber Frame beams as a dominant accent to create a strong rustic look. Often, Timber Framing is used in conjunction with Traditional Framing, Log, and SIPs. These Large Timbers can be used as loadbearing beams & posts or they can be added in for aesthetics to create the mountain rustic feel many desire in a mountain home. Spectrum Construction can help you decide how best to implement Timber Framing in your home to create the look at feel you want.

What are sips?

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a high-performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. SIPs are an incredible alternative to traditional frame construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). SIPs combine several components of conventional/frame building, such as studs and joists, insulation, vapor barrier and air barriers. They can be used for many different applications, such as exterior wall, roof, floor and foundation systems. SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. The outside of the project can be finished with log sliding, wood sliding, stucco and many other types of finishes.

Spectrum Construction has utilized SIPs on many projects; both as the primary building method and as the roof system on Traditional Framed, Log, and Timber Framed homes. Our clients have always been very pleased with the superior insulating results SIPs provide.

The Build Process

There are three main elements that govern a project: Budget, Quality Levels, and Size. Usually, any two elements will determine the third. The building process is unique for every home, but there are overall steps that are followed regardless of building materials.

Budget, quality levels, and size

Stage 1: Draw up preliminary plans and choose a build site.
Stage 2: Finalize design, Budget, and Sign a Contract.
Stage 3: Obtain permits and Schedule Utilities.
Stage 4: Put in utilities, and break ground on build.
Stage 5: Build home.
Stage 6: Finish all last details and “pick up list”
Stage 7: Hand over keys.

Need a designer?

Often, potential clients find a home plan on their own. This can work just fine, however, sometimes you may need a local house designer/architect to update these plans to meet the local building/energy codes for Southwest Colorado. We have several we work with if you would like a referral. If you are currently having plans designed, we can assist with this process to make sure what you want on paper works in the field, and to make suggestions to help you stay within budget.

Before you buy

Before purchasing property it is best to know what style of home you would like to build as you will need to choose a building site that works with the footprint and design of your proposed home. If your dream includes having a walk out basement, you can’t select a site that is too flat. If this will be your primary residence you will want to consider how easy or hard the drive will be in the winter months. Being we are in rural Southwest Colorado, not all the roads are plowed after a heavy snow storm.
